Just like your skin, fresh tattoos can be sebsitive and they need to be taken care of. Here are some basics to know before you come into the shop and how to care for it after you leave.

BEFORE YOU COME

Make sure you eat and drink some water before coming in.
If possible and if needed, shave the area where you want the tattoo, hair can get in the way.
Stay away from alcohol and asprin, it can thin the blood and make you bleed more easily.
Stay hydrated! Hydrated skin is happy skin and with a tattoo, you want your skin to be happy beforehand.
Stay away from tanning beds and fake tans before and after the tattoo.

AFTERCARE

After about 3 hours, remove the bandage and clean it well with a mild soap and cold water. No scrubbing! Gently pat it dry and then let it air dry for a little while.
After it dries, apply an antibacterial ointment over the tattoo. Keep the skin moisturized, but not wet. Over the next 3-7 days continuously rinse off the ointment, let the skin air dry and then reapply every 6 hours.

After 3-7 days, you will notice your skin in the area getting flakey, like a sunburn, DO NOT PICK OR PEEL THE SKIN. It will naturally come off with time. You are now in the peeling phase. Switch to an unscented lotion, for sensitive skin, I recommend lubriderm. Apply lotion every 3-4 hours.

Scabbing.
It does happen and that's okay. Just make sure not to pick at them, let them come off with time. Picking can lead to color loss or uneven healing.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

After a tattoo heals, you still need to be careful with it. Don't let things or people touch it, it is still technically a wound.

Do not submerge your tattoo. Showers are fine, but try not to let the water beat on that skin and use lukewarm water. With hot water, your pore might open which can cause you to loose some color.
For at least 4 weeks, stay away from the bathtub and swimming. Wait until all peelings and scabbing has gone away completely.

Keep out of the sun as much as possible, UV rays can cause it to fade more quickly. After 3-4 weeks you should be fine, but make sure you apply a suntan lotion of at least 30spf.
